The film received average reviews from critics for its voice performances, score, and mediocre humor. Although, the film was a box-office success, grossing over $102 million worldwide against a $3.8 million budget. The story focuses on Mordecai, Rigby and their families on a cross-country adventure after the vacation to save the park from being turned into a post-apocalyptic wasteland and being demolited and turned into a shopping center.
